🌟Smriti🌟

by Kalyani Yoga

This week we look at the mind modification Smriti, which is memory, our experiences that have not slipped away. Sometimes we consciously choose to remember things, such as revising for an exam, and sometimes they arise without our request. It’s funny how the brain works. When we try to remember where something is (like those keys!) we can’t recall it but the moment we relax and don’t think about it, the memory floats to the surface. 🙂

Our brain is designed to forget what we don’t need – If we were to remember every single experience our mind would be very full! Our brain fills in the gaps with what we think we did. We brush our teeth every day but we don’t necessarily have a memory of every time we do it. Can you remember how and when you brushed your teeth last Tuesday? Probably not and you don’t need to remember this detail. However, you may have a memory of a friend you met last Tuesday but in a month’s time this memory may fade.

Memories have happened in the past and are the record of our perception at that time. Over time our memory of that event can change. If we want, we can use our imagination to change a memory so that it serves us well. Perhaps we have a memory of a challenging time. Rather than focusing on the negatives of that experience why not find the positives, or points of growth from that experience.

In all of this, yoga encourages us to be aware of the types of thoughts we have and to know that they do not define us.  That our true self, our divine light, lies beyond this and we can work towards connecting to this peace and enlightenment.
