Life is full of moments of joy. Our senses are treated to beautiful sounds, amazing sights, pleasant smells and delicious tastes. And with all these sense experiences our enjoyment increases. It is important to be present in these moments of joy and also be aware that these moments will pass – and when they do it is ok.
If we go searching and pinning for more we often become disappointed. For example, I have a slice of cake and it’s delicious. I have another slice of cake because I want more of that deliciousness, but interestingly it doesn’t quite hit the spot. I then have another slice of cake to see if it gets better but by this time I’m now feeling sick. Too much of a good thing- right! So much better if I had stopped at the first slice, enjoyed the moment, and didn’t go wanting more.
The media and advertising will play on this sense gratification and will tell us that we need x, y & z to be happy. However, to be truly happy and have peace, we should avoid letting ourselves be attached or desperate for these moments of joy and instead be more aware of what we do have. When we guide ourselves to be this way we can have a balanced and harmonious relationship with our senses and with our selves.
When we calm the desires, we calm the mind and when we calm the mind we connect with the divine energy within each of us – this is yoga.
Allow yourself to enjoy each moment and do not fear when it passes.
