🌟Saucha🌟

by Kalyani Yoga

This week we move onto the Niyama’s which are things that we should do to help us lead a happy and contended life. The first of these is Saucha – purity or cleanliness.

Cleanliness can be considered as how we maintain our bodies, minds and spaces. In fact, before I began writing this piece, I made sure my work space was clear of clutter to help me share my thoughts. 🙂

When we consider the body….

Fresh fruit and veg, clean water and fresh air are all good sources that we can consume to help keep our bodies pure on the inside.

Our nose is the body’s own amazing cleansing system. As we breathe, it filters the air that comes in and sends out what we don’t need.

Washing ourselves keeps our physical body fresh and clean. We all know that feeling of having a shower after a long journey, it feels sooo good. Through this act of cleansing we are being respectful to ourselves, we are taking care of our body – our vehicle for this life.

How about the mind….

The information that we consume should be pure. We can consider whether our music, tv, books etc are positive. I understand that it is important to be aware of suffering around us but we should not dismiss all the good that there is too – it is a balance.

When I meditate, I find it is a way to declutter my thoughts. I allow them to surface and simply be, I do not have to react to them. Afterwards I feel refreshed and lighter. Rather than being distracted by many thoughts, I have clarity to concentrate on what I need to do.

Having positive, loving and kind thoughts helps us to share that cheerfulness with everyone we meet – it is infectious.

And our physical spaces….

Our spaces can be organised and easy to clean, inducing a positive environment to work and grow. How good does it feel when we organise that cupboard or have clean sheets on our bed.

There are many ways of having Saucha (cleanliness) in our lives. When we are able to feel this sense of cleanliness and purity, we have a sense of space. Space to breathe, space to love, space to receive all that the universe has to offer.

Our Yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing) and meditation practices are all ways of cleansing. When we allow good things in – good things come out 🙂

How will you cleanse today?
