We’ve been looking at various methods for our meditation and this week I shared with you the Japa method which is repetition of a mantra or divine name.
By repeating a mantra (japa) it can help our focus (dharana). Our mantra can be repeated, mentally, verbally or written – but probably best not to think of it as writing lines when you doing this one 🙂 When repeating a mantra, we are sending a message to the universe and reinforcing our intention.
In class I asked you to repeat the mantra SOHAM, I am that. This powerful mantra is beautiful as you can repeat the SO on the inhale and HUM on the exhale. The meaning of soham helps us to connect with our truth, to know that we are not defined by our roles, our accomplishments, our bodies and that we are so much more. It is a very simple and accessible practise that we can all do. You will find yourself feeling much calmer and joyous.
Action: Soham naturally follows in our body though our breath. If you simply observe the in and out flow you may hear the sound SO on the inhale and HUM on the exhale.
I also came across this lovely poem in my Integral Yoga Magazine – I am That by Shantanand Saraswati. For me, it beautifully explains the meaning of Soham and I wanted to share it with you. The video is below.
We are all connected by the divine energy of the universe – peaceful and joyful!
